&CWH01New - Begin a new puzzle "New" clears the current puzzle and erases all clues from memory. If you have made changes to the current puzzle, but have not saved your work, New will warn you. &CWH02Open - Retrieve a puzzle "Open" reads a puzzle file and its corresponding clue file into memory so you can edit or print an existing crossword. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Name .... Select a puzzle from the displayed list. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok ...... Retrieve the selected puzzle. Cancel .. Dismiss the dialog without retrieving the puzzle. &CWH03Save - Save the current puzzle "Save" writes a copy of the current puzzle to disk. If the puzzle was previously retrieved from disk using "Open", Save overwrites that disk file with the new version. If the puzzle is new (an "UNTITLED" puzzle), CWC automatically switches to "Save As". &CWH04Save As - Change the puzzle name/title "Save As" is identical to "Save", except that you are given the opportunity to rename the puzzle and/or change its title. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Name .... Type the primary (8-character) part of a DOS filename. This is the external, disk filename of your puzzle and clues. Title ... Type up to four lines. Crossword Creator automatically centers this title above the puzzle when you print it. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok ...... Save the puzzle. Cancel .. Dismiss the dialog without saving the puzzle. &CWH05Import - Read words/clues from a file "Import" reads a disk file containing words and/or clues directly into Crossword Creator. Both "ASCII text" files and "comma-delimited" files are supported. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Name ...... Type the name of the file you wish to import. Include the drive ID and/or directory name if necessary. Contents .. Indicate whether the file contains only words, or both words and clues. Append .... ON: Adds the words to the word bank. OFF: Deletes all existing words in the bank before adding new ones. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok ........ Import the file. Cancel .... Dismiss the dialog without importing the file. &CWH06Export - Create a text file "Export" writes a copy of the current puzzle to a specially-formatted disk file. This file can be used to exchange puzzle data with other programs. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Name ................ Type the name of the file you wish to create. Include the drive ID and/or directory name if necessary. Format .............. Indicate whether you want an ASCII text file, or an "XWP" data file. Both the "Crossword Clipper" and the "Generic XWP" options produce XWP-formatted files, but Crossword Clipper adds some proprietary features that may be incompatible with other programs. If you will be using the XWP file with Crossword Clipper 2.0 or higher, select the "Crossword Clipper" format. Otherwise, select "Generic XWP". If you are exporting a crossword, use only the formats listed under the "Crossword" heading. If you are exporting a wordsearch, use only the formats listed under "WordSearch". Note: The following options apply only to the ASCII text format. Fill Puzzle Area .... ON: Fills in all unused squares, producing a rectangularly- shaped printout. OFF: Fills in unused squares only where necessary, producing a freeform-shaped printout. PC Characters ...... ON: Draws the puzzle using "extended" PC characters. OFF: Draws the puzzle using "standard" ASCII characters. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok .................. Export the puzzle. Cancel .............. Dismiss the dialog without exporting the puzzle. &CWH07Print - Print the current puzzle "Print" formats and prints the current puzzle. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Format .............. Select a print format. If you are exporting a crossword, use only the formats listed under the "Crossword" heading. If you are exporting a wordsearch, use only the formats listed under "WordSearch". Separate Clue Page .. ON: Skips to the top of a new page before printing the puzzle clues. OFF: Prints the puzzles and the clues on the same page. Continuous Forms .... ON: CWC assumes the printer can feed new pages of paper without intervention from you. OFF: CWC pauses between each page to allow you to insert a new piece of paper. Fill Puzzle Area .... ON: Fills in all unused squares, producing a rectangularly- shaped printout. OFF: Fills in unused squares only where necessary, producing a freeform-shaped printout. Saves time and ink. Center On Page ...... ON: Prints the puzzle in the center of the page. OFF: Prints the puzzle at the left margin. Big Boxes .......... ON: Prints very large puzzle boxes. OFF: Prints normal-sized puzzle boxes. Show Hints .......... ON: "Hinted" letters are always visible, regardless of the selected Print format. OFF: "Hinted" letters are visible only when non-hinted letters are also visible, depending on the selected Print format. Destination ......... Type the device or filename you want the printout sent to. The default value is "LPT1". Use this syntax for serial printers: COMn:baud,parity,data,stop example: COM1:9600,N,8,1 Copies .............. Type the number of copies you want. The default value is "1". Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok .................. Begin printing. Cancel .............. Dismiss the dialog without printing. &CWH08Proof Format - Customize the clue layout "Proof Format" allows you to customize the clue section of the Proof Sheet by selecting the order in which the three clue "components" are printed, left-to-right. Components ~~~~~~~~~~ Number .............. The clue index number. Clue ................ The clue text. Word ................ The puzzle word (solution). Settings ~~~~~~~~ Format .............. Select a clue line format. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok .................. Begin printing. &CWH09DOS Shell - Execute DOS commands "DOS Shell" temporarily suspends Crossword Creator in memory, and presents you with the DOS command line. To get back to Crossword Creator, type EXIT at the DOS command prompt and press Enter. &CWH10Exit - End Crossword Creator "Exit" terminates Crossword Creator and returns you to DOS. If you have made changes to the current puzzle but have not saved your work, Exit will warn you. &CWH11Undo - Restore a changed puzzle line "Undo" allows you to reverse the effect of a recent puzzle edit action. Undo works on a line-by-line basis. As long as you have not moved the cursor off of the edited line, your action can be undone. Once you move to another line, however, your edit action becomes permanent. &CWH12Edit Clues - Supply clues for each word "Edit Clues" allows you to input the text of your puzzle clues. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Across/Down .. Type up to four clue lines for each word. Delete ....... ON: Deletes the clue. OFF: Keeps the clue. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Next ......... Update the current clue(s) (if necessary), and scroll forward to the next word/clue in the puzzle. Search ....... Scan your data files to locate previously-written clues for this word. Ok ........... Update the current clue(s). Cancel ....... Dismiss the dialog without updating the current clue(s). &CWH13Pick List - Display the search results A "pick list" is displayed if the search function locates any matching words or previously-written clues. If you wish to use one of the words or clues in the current puzzle, simply select it from the list. Pick lists are presented automatically, at intervals of 50 words, as the search progresses. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Words/Clues .... Select the word or clue you wish to use. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Continue ....... Display the next page (interval) of matching words/clues. Cancel ......... Dismiss the dialog. &CWH14Edit Bank - Supply a word list "Edit Bank" allows you to add words to, or delete words from, the word bank. You can enter complete words, or use the search function to scan your data files for words that match a letter-pattern you specify. A pattern may contain letters of the alphabet or wildcards (any non-alpha character). For example, B??L??S is a valid pattern. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Word/Pattern ... Type a word you wish to add to the bank, or a letter pattern to search for. Search ......... Scan data files to locate matching words and clues (if any) for this word. Bank ........... Select a word you wish to delete from the bank. Keyboard Actions ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After typing a word, press Enter to add it to the bank. After selecting a word in the bank, press Enter to delete it. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok ........ Accept the word bank changes. Cancel .... Dismiss the dialog without changing the word bank. &CWH15Auto Place - Build the puzzle grid "Auto Place" assists you in building a puzzle grid by automatically intersecting the words you supply. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Word ...... Type the word you want CWC to "place" for you. Bank ...... If the word you wish to place is already in the word bank, you don't have to retype it. Simply select the word from the bank. Freeform .. CWC searches the entire Puzzle Window looking for potential intersections. Template .. CWC constrains its search to the "template" shape you have drawn in the Puzzle Window. Enabled ... ON: The robot automatically builds a complete puzzle, using the words currently present in the word bank. OFF: CWC attempts to place only the single word you typed or selected from the word bank. Long Words First .. ON: The robot sorts the word bank into descending order by word length, so that longer words are tried first. OFF: The robot tries words in the order that they were originally added to the word bank. Limits .... Type the highest row and column number that CWC should consider when searching for potential word placements. This enables you to constrain the size of your puzzle to specific dimensions. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Across .... Begin the placement search. CWC will initially try to place your word in the "Across" orientation (horizontally), but will switch to "Down" if necessary. Down ...... Identical to "Across...", except that the initial placement orientation is "Down" (vertical). Cancel .... Dismiss the dialog without placing any words. &CWH16Auto Place - Confirm the word placement "Auto Place" presents a "confirmation" dialog whenever a potential word location is found, and the "robot" setting is OFF. If the "robot" setting is ON, words are automatically placed at the first available intersection. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok ........ Place the word in the puzzle. The proposed location is displayed with blinking letters. Continue .. Skip the proposed location, and continue searching. Cancel .... Dismiss the dialog without placing the word, and stop searching. &CWH17Unplace All - Remove words from the grid "Unplace All" removes all words from the grid, and places them into the word bank. Existing clues are not disturbed. When used in conjunction with "Auto Place", this tool enables you to build alternate puzzle grids from the same set of words. Since the existing grid will be erased, "Unplace All" gives you a chance to save your work, if necessary, before proceeding. &CWH18Review Clues - Find missing/orphan clues "Review Clues" helps you identify and correct errors in your clue definitions by displaying the puzzle words, the text of their corresponding clues, and the index numbers. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Continue .. View the next page of clues. Cancel .... Dismiss the dialog without viewing the remaining clues. &CWH19Hints - Use short-cut hint functions "Hints" makes it easy to add or remove hinted letters from your puzzle. Remember that you can set and unset hints manually (one letter at a time) if these pre-defined functions don't meet your needs. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Set First Letter .... Make the first letter of each word a "hinted" letter. Remove All .......... Unset all hinted letters in the puzzle. Set All ACROSS ...... Hint every letter in each ACROSS word. Set All DOWN ........ Hint every letter in each DOWN word. Note: The above options were not designed for, and should not be used with, wordsearch grids. CWC will not be able to distinguish actual letters from "noise" letters if you alter the wordsearch's hint pattern. Make WordSearch ..... Change a crossword grid into a wordsearch grid. Unmake WordSearch ... Change a wordsearch grid back into a crossword grid. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok .................. Perform the selected hint function. Cancel .............. Dismiss the dialog without performing a hint function. &CWH20Printer - Select a printer driver "Printer" allows you to select the printer driver that best supports the model of printer you use. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Printer ... Select a printer from the displayed list. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok ........ Accept the selected printer driver. Cancel .... Dismiss the dialog without selecting a printer. &CWH21File Locations - Specify directory names "File Locations" tells CWC where to look for important files. If you leave an entry blank, CWC will look only in the current directory for those files. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Crossword Creator ... Type the DOS directory name where you want CWC to look for its printer driver files (*.CWP), and language files (*.CWL, *.CWH, *.CWI). Puzzles ............. Type the DOS directory name where you want CWC to look for your puzzle files. Search .............. Type the DOS directory name where you want CWC to look for additional "clue list" data files. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok .................. Accept the new directory names. Cancel .............. Dismiss the dialog without changing the directory names. &CWH22Colors - Customize the color scheme "Colors" allows you to customize CWC's color scheme. Settings ~~~~~~~~ Colors ....... Select the item you wish to change. Foreground ... Select the desired color. The "icons" are Background updated to show you what the new color scheme will look like. Commands ~~~~~~~~ Ok ........... Accept the new color scheme. Cancel .......
